Matthews Law and its lawyers have again been ranked as leaders in competition/antitrust in the Chambers Asia-Pacific 2019 Guide. Notably, the firm has been elevated to a “Band 2” position (just 5 years after being established), with Principal Andy Matthews retaining his “Band 1” ranking and Special Counsel Gus Stewart entering the Guide as an “Associate to Watch”.

The 2019 Guide describes Matthews Law as:

“[a] specialist competition law practice offering comprehensive advice on regulatory investigations and advisory matters and fair trading law for high-end clients. Established as a popular choice to assist in domestic and international cartel investigations. Noteworthy industry-specific expertise spanning telecommunications, dairy, aviation and health.”

In terms of the firm’s strengths, clients are quoted as saying “they provide a highly responsive service and they’re both commercially astute and technically excellent” and that “one of the most impressive things about the team is that they get to the heart of the matter very very quickly.

Andy Matthews retains his Band 1 ranking in the 2019 Guide, which he has held since 2006. Andrew is noted as being “esteemed by clients” who describe him as “smart, technically strong, pragmatic and responsive“, with one client noting that “in addition to an in-depth understanding of the law and its implications, Andy demonstrates good translation of these into practical applications by which the business can move ahead in navigating competition law compliance issues.”

Gus Stewart enters the 2019 Guide as an “Associate to Watch”. Clients say Gus is appreciated for being very client-focused, with one source noting that he “presents the information in a clear and concise way,” and recommends his ability to “really get under the hood of the client’s business.”
